Automata

Curiosities

Automata re purposing Victorian childrens blue enamel tea sets , creating the  ‘Tea For Two’ automata.  This set often appears in  my shop. When you turn the handle the sugar bowl or jug and two cups spin round on their saucers. A secret hiding place inside the fixed tea pot. They can either be wall mounted or put on little feet to be free standing. The blue tea sets are beautiful in themselves with character from years of play and corrosion.  Adding some simple mice is another favourite work. Turned from hard woods on my lathe and adding wire whiskers, glass bead eyes and suede ears. The Rabbits were one off piece, coming to life and up to mischief in some old terracotta plant pots. Do click on them !

Having a studio enables me to gather and store interesting things. Old drawers and porcelain dolls heads or something wooden that perhaps some else has made in the past. Re assembling to create something unique. Above are some example of earlier works. The Green Vase Lady was one of the first things I made when I set up my Hebden Bridge studio.
