Automata

The Commission Process

Some people are very clear about what they require from me for an automata  commission but others who are thinking of an automata often struggle to visualise an idea and maybe put off so hopefully this explanation will help. Having a look at my past commissions will give you an idea of the kind of work I make. I always love new challenges so don’t rule me out if you think your idea is too complicated. The last automata I made for a radio ham enthusiast gave me lots of new challenges which I really enjoyed.

The best bit about making a commission for me is working with the customer so you can either come to visit me at my studio or we could chat / face time to discuss what you are thinking of. This gives me  a chance to ask questions and propose some initial ideas.

When we have a loose idea we can chat about price range . This will  vary on how complex and demanding the mechanical movement side could be and how much detail is needed.

I will then do a few rough designs to work out the exact price. If you are happy to go ahead we can book you into my work schedule a plan a completion date . Often essential if it’s for a special occasion. I will then ask for a 50 % deposit. The balance, plus postage, is due when your piece is completed.

Before I make your piece I will ask for some photos so I can create a mood board of the characters and essential details. you will see some of these in the back ground of some of the photos in my commission examples. These are essential for likeness and proportion.

Once your piece is ready to be shipped to you, I’ll let you know, and you’ll send me the final payment Once  received I will carefully  pack your piece. This  will be sent either buy Royal Mail tracked and insured or be DPD courier.

If any un obvious instructions are required I will included these in the package and guidance on how to care for your piece.

Making an automata for a special occasion is something I value enormously, I will always go to great lengths to get things right so customers are happy and the magic of the detail is there. So far in my automata making I have never had a disappointed customer.
